Born 1868 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Was a miner in Staffordshire then moved to Shirebrook, Derbyshire.
Married to Florence Hood and had 15 children. He first enlisted in the 1st East Yorkshire regiment in April 1885 and purchased a discharge in Nov 1886. He renlisted in the same regiment in the newly formed 7th TR Bn in Sept 1914 attached to 50th Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division. 14 July 1915: landed at Boulogne. He received burns in June 1915 and may also have had a shrapnel wound to the head. He spent some time in the Royal Hospital, Chelsea and was discharged, no longer physically fit for service on 23 Sept 1916. Despite his injuries he lived until 1960 when he died at the age of 92.
He was not the only family member to fight in WW1 four of his sons also fought, 3 lost their lives and one served in WW2.
