Alfred William's Story
He died on 22 November 1916 from wounds incurred at the Somme.
Alfred (my uncle) was the son of Fred Horace Laurie, a Colour Sergeant in the E Lancs, and Bessie Bath Banks; who met each other in Dover. Alfred was one of three children born in Ireland (others in Gibraltar and Burnley - my father was the youngest). Alfred died in 1899 and my grandmother returned to Dover. The three sons were educated at the DYRMS, first in Chelsea, then Dover. Alfred joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, Siege Battery, became an NCO then received a field commission in 1915. He died on 22 November 1916 from wounds incurred at the Somme, and is buried at Bazentin-Le-Petit Military Cemetery. He left behind his widow Florence.
