William Henry's Story

His sister Kathleen Crabtree was my mother. William Henry won a number of medals as a racing cyclist and was employed as a coalminer at Cadeby Main Colliery. Together with his brother Gladstone Crabtree he enlisted as a volunteer at Conisbrough in September 1914. His service number was 15037 and he was attached to the 8th Battalion of the York & Lancaster Regiment. Sustained stomach wounds on 1st July 1916 near Authuille in Picardy on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He died of his wounds on 3rd July at a casualty clearing station in the village of Warloy-Baillon. His grave is in the Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery extension. He was the eldest son of William John and Eliza Ann Crabtree of 29 Highfield Road, Conisbrough.
