Matthew's Story
Matthew had been a soldier in another time from 1890 to 1900.He left military service in 1900 and spent the next 14 years working in the docks in Derry. With the home rule crisis in Ireland during 1912 he became active in the Irish National Volunteers and with the outbreak of WW1 went to fight in France as the leader of that organisation pledged the INV to Britains aid in return for home rule for Ireland. Because of his previous previous military experience he was given the rank of sergeant. He was the founder of a flute band in Derry and family history tells of a substantial number of members of the band joining up with him.
