William's Story
My father fought in Mespotamia (now Iraq) at the battle of Umm El Hannah and on return from a spell in India he again fought at Sanna-I-Yat, the relief of Kut and the capture of Baghdad. He was wounded in action by shrapnel in January 1916 and was awarded the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory medals. Why is the war in Mespotamia never mentioned although great privations were experienced there? I wonder how many of our soldiers out there now know of that previous war and that it did not just take place in Europe.

When the second world war started William again volunteered for service but was refused on age grounds. He was an Industrial Civil Servant working at the MOD REME Workshops in Portsmouth and also served in the Home Guard.
Was machine gunned at Fareham whilst cycling home, by a returning German bomber but took cover and was not hit.
