John William's Story

John Arkill was my maternal grandfather. He enlisted in 1915 with his son Thomas into the Royal Engineers. He served in Salonika and France as a Sapper. My grandfather must have been one of the oldest recruits. He was 40 when he enlisted.

He didn't speak much of his experiences during WW1 but I know he undertook many dangerous missions. However, he did tell us about the rain, mud, snow, and rats. Mainly rats.

He died in 1961 aged 92 yrs.
