Thomas Edward Capel was born at Thorborough, Buckinghamshire on 3 November 1882. He was the son of Samuel Capel and Eliza Capel (nee Davis). Thomas married a local girl, Elizabeth Varney. They had two children in Thornborough before moving the family up to Wealdstone, Middlesex. Five more children were to be born there. Thomas, by then a Coal Carrier, attested for the 27th Royal Fusiliers on the 9 December 1915. He served with them in France until late 1916 when he was transferred to the 6th Battalion of the Royal West Kent Regiment. He was taken prisoner of war at Arras on 5 May 1917. He was later confirmed held at the Prisoner of War camp at Cassel, Germany. It is probably that he was taken prisoner after receiving a gunshot wound to the leg. The effects of the wound led to blood poisoning and his eventual death at Cassel on 21 July 1917.
