William's Story
William Cowan was wounded in 1916, again in 1917 from which he finally died
William was the eldest of 12 children, joining up with his brothers. He was first wounded in 1916 and on his recovery he returned to his battalion. He was wounded again during April1917 suffering from shrapnel injuries whilst sleeping in his dug out. He succumbed to these wound on 5th May 1917 10 months after his younger brother Bob was killed. He is buried at Faubourg d'Amiens cemetery Arras. He and his brother are remembered on the War memorial at Ravenglass; dedicated by the Prince of Wales in 1921, when their mother Elizabeth Cowan was presented to him.
