Bob's Story
Bob Cowan enlisted as Kitchener volunteer in the newly formed 8th battalion in 1914
Bob was the 2nd of Robert Henry and Elizabeth Cowan's 12 children. He and his brothers joined up and served in the Somme. He was remembered by his surviving brother Ben as a daredevil who looked for challenge and adventure. A family story of his fearlessness, was of him walking along the parapet of the railway bridge across the road at Ravenglass. He was alledgedly a sniper in the Border Regiment and went missing presumed killed on 5th July 1916. His body was never recovered and he is remembered at Thiepval in France.
