Edwin George's Story
Edwin or "Ted" Chenneour was my Great uncle. He was born in Sidmouth and went to All Saints school. The family moved to Exeter in about 1908 when his father an upholster took over the license of his mother's inn "the Horse and Groom" inLongbrook St.He and his sister Maggie went to ST Sidwell's School and then he went to ST John's the Bluecoat School in Exeter. He was a bright boy and played the violin and started to study Art and English at the college which was to become Exeter University. He joined the 7th Devons Reg "B" comp as a cyclist. They were sent to Whitby for several months in1914 and 15 and then transfered to Totnes in Devon prior to going to France. However Ted was not to make France as he was taken very ill and sent to the Red Cross hospital in Paignton where he died a dreadful death from anthrax. He was given a full military funeral and is buried at the Higher Cemetary in Exeter. His name is on the War Memorial at St David's Church Exeter, and on the War Memorial at the Phoenix Centre, fomerly the original building of Exeter University.
