William John's Story
Son of George and Mary Ann, of Cathays, Cardiff. Died 27th August 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele
William John 'Billy' Evans son of George and Mary Ann, born abt 1897 and died at Ypres 27 August 191
William John 'Billy' Evans, was my paternal Great Uncle and only son of George and Mary Ann Evans. Billy was born about 1897 in the Swansea area of Glamorgan, posisbly Neath.
George and Mary Ann were both from Pembrokeshire but moved to Cardiff with George's employment on the Railway as a 'Ganger'. My father told me that George later worked on a farm as a bailiff. My father and his brothers lived with George and Mary Ann while their mother was in the Land Arny and their father away at war.
Apart from my grandmother, Alice Mary, who married David Clifford; Billy had another sister, Ethel, who met an American Soldier in the 1917-18 period, who she later married and then emigrated to Ohio.
My father remembered Billy and said he was very popular and recalled him as lighthearted and adored by his sisters and parents, especially his mother. His loss was very sorely felt.
I do not know the circumstances of Uncle Billy's death, beyond the date and place. I hope to discover more when time and resources allow, providing any records survive.
