Mary's Story
My grandmother, born Mary Jamieson but later known by the name of Cameron, was a forewoman in the WAAC attached to the 2nd Artists Rifles, based at Hare Hall in Essex. It is likely she was a cook rather than someone who did admin, and family stories tell of her being stationed somewhere outside of Lille at some point. She had moved to London as a very young woman from a small village in Scotland, and before the war had become active in the women's suffrage movement, taking part in rallies at Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park. Unfortunately her war record was one of those which was destroyed during WW2 and this photo is the only memento we have of her war service.
