Horatio Parkyns's Story
Horatio Parkyns Bird was the youngest of 4 brothers and regarded as the baby. He was the only one of the 4 not to return from battle which is probably quite unusual. His family were heartbroken. He is buried in a small cemetery with only about 140 graves at Track X Ypres. It is in the middle of cornfields with a narrow grass path leading to it. Beautiful and peaceful. In the early 1980's our family visited his grave, the first family members to do so. We have the photographs sent to his parents. The first is just a wooden cross and later the stone was erected. We also have photos of him as a young man and one in his swimming costume wearing his swimming medals.
