Sindey's Story

I knew my great grandfather well, in fact, I grew up believing he was an early volunteer who'd almost single handedly won the war. He "missed" Passendale by being shot through the knee & was shipped home for recovery before being declared unfit to fight. The reality was slightly different, he joined up in 1916, shipped to France in 1917 as part of the 2nd Monmouthshire regiment. He spent just 2 weeks in the front line before his injury meant a lucky escape. We all visited the Menin Gate in Ypres in 1975, he cried when the fire brigade played the Last Post, then showed us the names of all the young men he knew listed on the wall who didn't come home & who's remains have not been found. Very sad.
