Arthur Edward William James's Story
I write this for my nan, who never knew her father because of the war: he was taken away three months before she was born. Private Arthur Weller (sometimes known as Tickner) of the Queen's West Surrey Rifles was reported missing in action at Ypres on 31 October 1914, leaving behind a wife with three small children and a fourth, my grandmother, yet to be born. He was later declared killed in action, although no body was ever found. There is no marked grave for him and no place where the family could go to and mourn him.
It may be 94 years since his death, but it still touches lives today. He paid the ultimate price for his decision to serve.
He went to war at a time when it was believed it would be over by Christmas and he was among the first men to enlist in Dorking, long before conscription came in. He went to war to serve his country and provide for his family.
It may be 94 years since his death, but it still touches lives today. He paid the ultimate price for his decision to serve. He gave his life for his country, for his family and for his fellow man, and for that we remember him.
