Henry's Story

My Aunt Maria Concetta Darmanian, at the age of 18 married Sergeant Henry Cook aged 26, on 19 October 1912 in Malta.

Henry Cook was born in Andover, the son of Henry and Emma Cook, nee Wifett. Maria and Henry's first child was born 17 July 1913, but only lived for five months.

As my Aunt Maria could not write in English, she had a friend who would write on her behalf to her husband. For reasons known only to her, my aunt Maria's 'friend' wrote to my uncle Henry that his wife was having an affair, subsequently her allowance was stopped immediately.

Henry Cook died due to wounds received at the battle of the Somme, on the 20 July 1916, and my aunt Maria died two years later in Malta.
