James's Story

James Atherton served in the 1/5th South Lancashire Regiment. He was made a prisoner of war at the battle of Cambria on 30th November 1917. He was taken to Friedrichsfeld Prisoner of War Camp in Germany where he stayed until the end of the war. On release he was given a hand written letter from King George V saying how pleased he was that everyone was back in the old country. James died of a stomach ulcer in 1927 that his wife thought was initially caused by the poor diet in the prisoner of war camp. This was 6 months after the birth of my father, his only child.
