Grandpa Stanley joined the Queen's Bays at the outbreak of WW1. Trooper Hobbs was a member of the 1st contingent of the regiment to be sent to France on August 4th 1914. He was badly gassed in Arras in 1916 and he then returned to England. He was invalided out of the Queen's Bays but re-enlisted in a Yeomanry regiment and was drafted to Egypt. He became a sergeant in the Imperial Camel Corps with Lawrence of Arabia and told a story about running a 'crown and anchor' game and managing to win a considerable amount of money from the Australian Light Horse Corps. When Lawrence ordered the Camel Corps on a reconnaissance of the unfriendly Senussi tribe out in the desert, Stanley buried his stash and never saw it again!
