Walter Henry's Story
Walter "Ben" Irish was knick named after a famous jockey. He joined the 19th Service Battalion Royal Fusiliers in April 1915 and was discharged in early November that same year with epilepsy given as the reason.
My grandfather never suffered from epilepsy, but was said to have told my Mum that he had been gassed. I have been told that he may have suffered ill effects from carbide gas during training.
He harboured guilt throughout his life that he stayed at home when his friends went off to die for their country.
