DCM CITATION
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When employed as a scout he trhee times volunteered for dangerous and difficult patrols in very exposed country under heavy shelling and machine-gun fire. By his cheerfulness and courage he kept up the spirits and efficiency of the other members of the patrol.
Samuel's medal was presented in Long Eaton Market Place by Brigadier-General Jackson. After the ceremony Sam's former employer gave him a parcel which contained a gold pocket watch engraved with his name.
After Samuel's death the watch was given to his great grandson, also called Samuel, who is currently a serving officer in the Royal Air Force.
