The worst 6 months for the battalion began on 24 November 1917 when it was ordered to take Bourlon Village. The objective at the station was reached by 3 companies but they were cut off and over the next 2 days were overwhelmed by the enemy. The 3 coys took over 400 casualties, including the C.O., only 80 were taken prisoner.
March 1918 found them near Bapaume in time for the German Spring Offensive taking another 250 casualties.
The 14th were sent at the beginning of April 1918 to a quiet area near Laventie to rest. The rest didn't last long, on the 9th April the 2nd phase of the German offensive (Georgette) steamed through the area. Three coys were lost including Tom who was taken POW until the end of hostilities.
