John's Story
My Grandfather joined the Connaught Rangers at the age of 14 in 1907and was posted to India. He arrived in France in 1914 via Karachi and Marseille. In December 1914 the 1st and 2nd Batallions were amalgamated. The Connaught Rangers were part of the Ferozepore brigade (Lahore Division). On 22nd April 1915, following the 1st use of gas, he suffered a gun shot wound to the thigh whilst attacking enemy troops on Mauser Ridge, Pilkem near Ypres. My Grandfather was invalidid back to Kinsale, Ireland. Following his recovery from his wounds, he joined the regiment in 1917 in Mesopotamia, Paestine and Egypt. In 1922 the Connaught Rangers were disbanded and he joined the Inniskilling Fusiliers.
