Herbert's Story

Herbert George Vince. Married to Mary Schwearman, joined the DLI in 1914 as one of the ‘Durham Pals’, walking from Consett to Tow Law to sign up. Was trained at a camp in Morpeth and sent to France. Went right through the war in all major campaigns, including the ill-fated assault in the Crimea, was gassed a total of 3 times. Was demobbed in 1919 and worked for the Consett Iron Company. Died in 1926, probably from damage to his lungs as a result of mustard gas.

Was buried in Blackhill cemetery in a double plot which was opened in 1980 to bury his wife, Mary, after 54 years as a widow.

Refused to talk too much about the war, but did mention drinking water that rats were running through and walking on the bodies of the dead.
