George's Story
George Dickinson fought for his country against the Germans in France in 1915 and 1916 culminating in fierce fighting at Vimy ridge in June 1916.
He was seriously wounded in an attack on 19th June but, amazingly was rescued by a young german soldier who hoist him on his back and carried him to a British Field hospital station, and promptly surrended there.
George therefore survived the conflict and was invalided out of the service and later became penpals with the gallant young German soldier after the conflict.
George Dickinson was my grandfather, who I sadly never met.
