Herbert George's Story
Bert was my grandmother Rosetta's first husband. They were married at St Stephens Church, Forest Gate, in what is now the London Borough of Newham, in April 1916. Their daughter Gladys was born in 1917, Bert only saw her once, when he was on leave.
Died just 19 days before the Armistice.
He was taken prisoner and held at Kassel POW camp in Germany. Family legend has it that he was shot, and died on the day peace was declared, but research has shown that in fact he died of pneumonia in Langensalza Hospital, Germany. He passed away on 23rd October 1918.
Had he lived, my grandmother would not have gone on to marry my grandfather, in 1927; so Bert literally gave his life for me, albeit unwittingly and so tragically. I want to ensure that he is not forgotten; may he rest in peace.
