Enlisted in 1/6 Bn Rpyal Warwickshire Regiment in 1914. Regiment arrived in France 22 March 1915. Wounded 1916 and invalided back to England to recover. After recovery reassigned to 2/7 Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Won Military Medal 1918 after he "took charge of his platoon after all the officers and NCOs had been wounded or killed and after a successful attack on a farmhouse occupied by the enemy brought all his men back safely with only two wounded". The Brigadier personally commended him for his heroism and pinned the ribbon of the medal on him while still on the battlefield. Awarded DCM for an action at Sommaing on 24 October 1918. His section were holding an advance position and he maintained his position against determined enemy counter attacks for 10 hours until he was relieved. His section suffered 50% casualties during the action. He survived the war and returned home in February 1919.
