Charlie's Story

My Great Uncle Charles Hutchin joined the Territorials in 1914 at the age of 16 for the purpose of having a holiday! The Sergeant Major at the recruiting centre when Charles gave his age as 16 years told him to walk outside and then return and give his age as 17 years and he would then sign him on. He served for five years and his words were "it was not a holiday I ever want to experience again". A sentiment shared by many I am sure. He died at the age of 92 years.
