The BBC is going to get a little bit smaller. After a period of public consultation and with the agreement of the BBC Trust two digital radio stations 6 Music and the Asian Network will close down, spending on TV programmes from abroad and on sports rights will be pared back, and the number of sections on the BBC’s website will be halved. The £600 million saved will be reprioritised into what’s described as ‘high quality content’. The director-general, Mark Thompson in outlining the details of his strategic review says the BBC cannot attempt to do everything, must be clearer about its own limits, and should leave space for others.
