Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit (1985) by Jeannette Winterson
Jeanette Winterson
This is Jeanette Winterson's semi-autobiographical story of a young girl discovering her sexuality.

Her adopted mother is a passionate Pentecostalist whose world view is so entirely governed by the Bible, that she believes her daughter to be the Chosen One from God. But Jess's feelings for other girls, and her mother's fury at her daughter's 'unnatural passions' leads to her abrupt expulsion from the church, and the beginning of her search to be herself.

Blending fairytales, myths and bibilical references Jeanette Winterson creates a story about the tensions between religion and the nature of desire.
