Eating disorders and young people6 Feb 2006
Why is the issue still taboo?

Eating disorders affect over a million people in the UK, and young people aged 14 to 25 are most at risk.

Today the Eating Disorders Association releases a new report which finds that although 90% of parents said they felt confident about discussing eating disorders with their children, 45% of young people said they couldn’t tell anyone about their problems.

So why do eating disorders remain such a stubborn problem among young people; why do problems of communication remain, and if these young people do seek professional help, how good is the support they receive?

Louis Appleby, Mental Health Czar at the Department of Health and Susan Ringwood, Chief Executive of the Eating Disorders Association discuss the issues with Ritula Shah.
