What is the truth about stress?

Last week researchers at University College London said they had found that a stressful professional life increases your chances of developing heart disease and diabetes. In their 14-year study of 10,000 civil servants, they found evidence of a link between stress exposure and ill-health.

But what is the truth about stress? Former academic Angela Patmore claims in her new book that the “stress management industry” is medicalising normal human emotions, selling us expensive products that we don’t really need, and creating the very anxiety that it seeks to alleviate. Jenni Murray asks Angela to justify her views and she also talks to Ann McCracken, an executive member of the International Stress Management Association which represents the interests of stress consultants and companies.
