Building musical links with Romania

It was at the height of Ceausescu’s Romania in 1972 that a young pianist from Bucharest came to Leeds for a piano competition. Anda Anastasescu was offered a scholarship and decided to stay without permission. Her decision resulted in her being given a six year prison sentence in absentia.

Anda remained in Britain and is now the artistic director of A Romanian Musical Adventure – the first London festival of composers from her home country, including Constantin Silvestri.

Anda talks to Martha about her life and musical career.
