Carols22 Dec 2005
Once in Royal David's City

Once in Royal David's City sung by the choristers at Kings College Cambridge generally signals the start of Christmas. It was written in 1848 by a Victorian woman Mrs Cecil Francis Alexander. This was long before it was considered seemly for a woman's voice to be heard in church but her words are now heard by millions of church goers and radio listeners across the globe every year.

Judy Merry explores the history of one of our most treasured carols.
