Mary Spencer Watson15 Nov 2005
An appreciation of her work

The sculptor Mary Spencer Watson moved to Purbeck in Dorset with her artist parents in 1923 when she was 10, and has lived there ever since. Her carving career spans seven decades, during which time she usually carved in local stone, and her work was often based on Christian scriptures and classical mythology. In 1996 she was nominated International Women of the Year in the European Union awards. Aged 92, Mary is still carving.
