Mechelen is a city in the middle of Belgium, and it’s currently holding a festival called A City in Female Hands. It has a whole cultural programme centring around feminity with the focus on the lives of two women: Margaret of York and Margaret of Austria.
In the 1500s, the royal courts of these two women played an important role in shaping the political and cultural life, not only of the city, but also of Europe.
Nicola Fell went to Mechelen to find out more about its influential women.
