The garden on a willow pattern tea plate is probably most people's idea of a Chinese garden: a stream, a bridge and a willow as the setting for a lovesick couple. But what are Chinese gardens really like and what role did they play in the lives of Chinese women?
As the major new exhibition China: The Three Emperors has just opened at the Royal Academy, Corinne Julius has been visiting some of the Imperial gardens in Beijing in the company of one of the curators Hiromi Kinoshita.
