Children's voices and divorce cases24 Oct 2005
Do kids really know what's best?

Recently on the programme, the BBC’s World Affairs Editor John Simpson talked about having to choose as a child between living with his mother or father when his parents decided to separate and the years of guilt he felt about his decision.

In today’s divorce cases, children’s voices are increasingly being taken into account. But do children necessarily know what is best for them, or do they try to second-guess their parent’s wishes?

Are they sometimes influenced by one or other parent? In our attempt to move away from a paternalistic process which ignores the child’s freedom of expression and participation, how do we ensure that children don’t shoulder too much responsibility in what is essentially an adult conflict?
