Trees in distress!
After the second world war there were tens of thousands of damson trees scattered throughout the Lyth Valley in Cumbria. Their numbers had declined so steeply that a special Association was set up to save them.
They now number a few thousand but the way of life they represented is in decline. Despite this the road through the valley is still busy with stalls selling the fruit to travellers on the way to and from Windermere.
Damson gin producer and member of the Westmorland Damson Association Vicky Barratt guided Jill Hopkins through the valley.
