Over 40s having children16 Sep 2005
Are they defying nature and risking heartbreak?

A strongly worded article in the BMJ today warns that women who delay having children are defying nature and risking heartbreak.

The article is written by three doctors who feel that the true cost of delaying motherhood isn't being acknowledged.

They believe society, employers and health planners are to blamed for encouraging women to delay motherhood until their 30s and 40s, and want to see more done to help women have children when they're more biologically suited to.

Guests: Susan Bewley, consultant obstetrician at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in London, Jenny Watson acting chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission, and Sheila Lawlor, Director of Politeia.
