Isabel Rawsthorne9 September 2005
One of the most significant muses of the 20th century

1905 saw the birth of two major British composers - Constant Lambert and Alan Rawsthorne - and this year at the BBC Proms, that centenary has been marked by performances of some of their best-loved works.

But Lambert and Rawsthorne shared more in common than just the year of their birth and their music; they were both married to the same woman.

Born Isabel Nicholas in London's East End in 1912, she went on to become an artist, a bon viveur and one of the most significant muses of the 20th century.

Rachel Hopkin found out more about Isobel's life and influence.
