Female football commentators22 August 2005
Move over Motson

In 2004, more women watched Portugal knock England out of the European Football Championships than tuned in to the top rated soap of the year.

Female fans now make up a fifth of Premiership football match crowds and the number of women playing football has increased ten fold in a decade. But how will all this change the nature of football broadcasting?

Female football commentator Jacqui Oatley, John Williams, Director of the Centre for Sociology of Sport at Leicester University and Sophie Brown, co-author of Everything A Girl Needs To Know About Football, join Jenni, in a 4-4-2 formation, to discuss whether a day will come when women take over the microphones from the likes of John Motson and Alan Hansen.

Women's Football

Everything A Girl Needs To Know About Football by Sophie Brown and Simeon de la Torre is published in paperback by A&C Black, ISBN 0713672412
