The country's first centre dedicated to the celebration of children's books
This Friday, the country's first centre dedicated to the celebration of children's books opens in Newcastle. Housed in an old grain warehouse overlooking the River Ouseburn, Seven Stories is named after the seven plots in storytelling: Rags to Riches, The Quest, Voyage and Return, Rebirth, Comedy, Overcoming the Monster and Tragedy. The building itself has seven storeys too.
The centre will be home to the work of around one hundred children's writers and illustrators, and will feature previously unseen work including letters, drafts and illustrations. Highlights include a draft manuscript of the Shirley Hughes classic Lucy and Tom's Day and an original draft of Noel Stretfield's Ballet Shoes.
Mary Briggs the Chief Executive and Elizabeth Hammill the artistic director have worked for 10 years setting up a modern, family-friendly art gallery and interactive museum.
