Pictures and today’s media

"A Thousand Yards Stare" was the term used in the First World War when soldiers would return from action in the trenches with their eyes unfocused on the immediate world around them.

Abi Zakarian reworks this idea in her latest play, about a picture editor who starts to lose her sight as a result of the horrific images she has seen.

Abi is a picture editor herself and Jenni talks to her along with Abbie Trayler-Smith, a photojournalist, about the role of pictures in today’s media.

“A Thousand Yards” by Abi Zakarian is on at the Southwark Playhouse, 7 – 25th June 2005. Box office: 0207-620-3494
