Later this week the Designer of the Year award will be announced, and one of the contenders is Hilary Cottam, who, surprisingly, is not actually a designer herself. But she uses design to change the way that schools, prisons and hospitals operate, and her ideas have produced results: the failing Kingsdale School in South London is now a success story.
