The offside rule

Football is on many levels a straightforward game: 11 men, one ball, and one goal to get the ball into. But that doesn't take into account the mysterious offside rule - a puzzle to anyone who isn't a dedicated follower of footie.

To keep it simple: player on Team A boots ball towards goal belonging to Team B. But... and this is the important bit... as Player A boots the ball up the pitch there has to be at least two of Team B's players between their goal and anyone on Team A. Simple?

England captain Faye White explained more to Rebecca Sandles in the next in our footballing master class to mark the women's European football championships beginning at the week end.
