Monica Young26 May 2005
The life and legacy of the late potter

When Monica Young arrived in the Yorkshire village of Reeth thirty years ago, she was a penniless artist. She quickly became a fixture in the village, building a workshop where she sculpted huge pots the height of a man. She was in her seventies when she won international acclaim and her work sold to collectors from Tokyo to New York.

Monica died last October and to celebrate her life and the impact she had on this quiet Dales village, the remaining pots in her workshop have been gathered together for a special exhibition for the Swaledale Festival. After the festival the pots will be dispersed to their new owners and galleries so it's the last chance to see the work together.

In 2003 Monica talked to Jill Hopkins about her late success. This week Jill returned to Reeth to talk to villagers about Monica's life and legacy.

Swaledale Festival runs from 27 May to 12 June
