The Punjab phenomenon
Bhangra music has come a long way from the days when musicians would take their drums out into the fields to play for the dancers celebrating the Sikh Spring Harvest Festival, Vaisakhi.
The insistent drum beat made it easily adaptable into the Asian pop music of choice and it already has a history going back thirty years in the UK and a culture that’s grown up around it, especially in Birmingham.
What’s more, it’s actually being exported back to the Punjab and this is celebrated in an exhibition ‘From Soho Road to the Punjab’, currently touring the country. Although it’s traditionally a male dominated form, women artists and practitioners are making their mark too and it has a devoted female fan base.
Judi Herman went to the exhibition to find out more from some female bhangra enthusiasts and spoke also to DJ Ritu, club promoter, DJ and radio presenter.
