Fan dancing09 May 2005
Fan dancing conjures up images of spectacular fans covering - or not quite covering - the equally spectacular bodies of nude show girls

From the 19th century onwards dancers in America equipped with two huge ostrich feather fans would tease their audience with glimpses of what lay beneath.

Josephine Baker famously seduced audiences in Paris with her routine. And in 1933 the dancer Sally Rand was hired for the 'Chicago Century of Progress Exposition' and saved the fair financially with her fan dance routine.

So you would think that in these liberated times fan dancing would be just a footnote in the history of exotic dance. But there has recently been a revival of interest in learning this neglected art.

Dancer Kat Culbert runs fan-dancing workshops and Judi Herman went along to find out how to wield a fan.

Fan dancing workshops at Brighton Festival are on 14 and 22 May.
