The first celebrity couple?
Interest in the lives of the rich and famous has never been higher and we often think that's a modern invention. But the first "celebrity couple" was in fact the Victorians Thomas and Jane Carlyle.
Recently a classic biography, The Carlyles at Home, written by Thea Holme who used to be the custodian of their house, has been re-published, and their former home has been re opened to the public for the season. Thomas is known for his weighty historical works, but it is his domestic life and his relationship with Jane that have provoked the most enduring interest.
Victoria Shepherd found out more about the marriage and spoke first to Rosemary Ashton, author of Thomas and Jane Carlyle: Portrait of a Marriage.
