American journalist on her hobo childhood
Jeanette Walls has written a novel about her strange and difficult childhood spent on the road with her parents who were too alternative to tie down a steady job or even cook properly for their four children.
She finally escaped her father, an engineer but a hopeless alcoholic and her mother an artist who abhorred motherhood, only to find they followed her to live on the streets of New York whilst she took her first job at a national magazine.
